Ashington grew as a coal town, and the grid of colliery rows in Hirst, with its tree-named streets and numbered avenues, is still at its heart. Around it are council semis from the 1920s onwards, the late-1960s growth to the south and estates such as Nursery Park, Wansbeck and Fallowfield.

Homes in Ashington and their lofts

Ashington was once known as the world's largest coal-mining village, and its housing follows that story. From the 1840s colliery owners built parallel rows of terraced houses for miners. In Hirst the streets still run in a grid, with north-south roads named after trees and east-west avenues numbered from First to Seventh. From the 1920s the council built mainly semi-detached houses, the town spread south and south-east from the late 1960s, and Nursery Park, Wansbeck and Fallowfield followed in the late 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

That gives a wide spread of lofts. The older terraces tend to have small, low roof spaces, sometimes with a thin and uneven layer of insulation added long ago. Council semis and 1960s to 1980s houses often have 50mm to 100mm of wool, well below the 270mm that is now recommended. In most cases the fix is a top-up. Where old insulation is damp, dirty or damaged by rodents, removing it first gives a cleaner result.

Common loft problems we look for here

In older terraces we look closely at the condition of the roof timbers and felt, at any old water tanks and pipework, and at gaps where mice can get in. In newer houses the common issue is boarding laid straight onto the joists, which squashes insulation. Ashington sits close to the coast, so we also make sure the eaves stay clear for ventilation once the new layer is in, to keep condensation down.

What happens when we visit

We start with a free assessment of your loft in Ashington. We look at the depth and condition of any insulation, the access, the timbers, the ventilation and anything stored up there. You then get a written quotation that sets out the scope, the materials and the price before anything is agreed. We use Knauf Earthwool mineral wool loft roll, which is rated Euroclass A1 and non-combustible. The work is carried out by The Insulation Company or an approved installation partner, and we finish with completion checks. Eligible installations come with a written guarantee of up to five years, with the terms set out in your quotation.

Loft insulation in Ashington: FAQs

Do you cover Morpeth, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Alnwick?

Yes. As well as Ashington, we cover Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Morpeth and Alnwick. Alnwick is towards the northern edge of the area we cover, so send us your postcode and we will confirm when we can visit.

My terrace in Hirst has hardly any loft insulation. What would you do?

We would start with a free assessment to check the loft space, the timbers and any old insulation. Usually we can lay mineral wool between and over the joists to reach 270mm, or as close as the space allows. If the existing wool is damp or contaminated, we may suggest removing it first. Everything is set out in a written quotation before any work is agreed.

How much does loft insulation cost in Ashington?

It depends on the size of your loft, how much insulation is already there, how easy the loft is to get into and whether anything has to be cleared or removed first. We give you a written quotation after a free assessment, so you know the scope, materials and price before you agree to anything. Our guide to what affects the cost explains the main factors.

How long does loft insulation take in a Ashington home?

It depends on the size of the loft and what needs doing. Most straightforward jobs are short, and work that involves removing old insulation, boarding or ventilation takes longer. Your quotation says what is involved, and you can read more in how long loft insulation takes.

Are there loft insulation grants in Ashington?

Government-backed schemes change from time to time and eligibility depends on your household and your home, so we can't promise that you will qualify. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check. We are always happy to quote for the work on its own.

The boys were very kind and well advised. They got the job done quickly and smoothly. My loft was in pretty bad shape, as I have a slight hoarding problem, and they passed no judgement. Thank you for your service.

It was refreshing to have two young lads who came in and worked incredibly hard on my loft. They came early and left late to get the job done. The best workers I’ve had in a long time, and I would recommend them 100%.

Great service with great prices. I felt very comfortable letting them get on with the insulation. No mess was left behind, and it was definitely needed with the horrible weather.
