Most of Cramlington was built from the 1960s onwards as a privately led new town, so many homes in estates such as Beaconhill, Collingwood, Eastfield, Mayfield, Shankhouse and Southfield have lofts that are now several decades old. Many still have the thin insulation they were built with.

Homes in Cramlington and their lofts
Cramlington is unusual. Plans for a new town were approved in the early 1960s, and instead of a government development corporation the building was led largely by private house builders, with the county council providing roads and services. The result is a town made up mainly of estates of semis, detached houses and short terraces, built from the 1960s through to today, around the older core of Cramlington Village.
Houses from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s often have similar lofts: a roof of trussed rafters with diagonal braces, a small hatch and, very often, a layer of mineral wool about 50mm to 100mm deep laid between the joists. That falls well short of the 270mm now recommended. In most cases a top-up laid across the joists brings it up to depth without removing what is there.
Common loft problems we look for here
Many Cramlington homeowners use the loft for storage, and that is where problems start. Boards laid straight onto the joists squash the insulation underneath, and a squashed layer does far less. If you want to store things, raised loft boarding sits on legs above the full 270mm, so you keep the storage and the warmth. We also check that the trussed rafters are not cut or overloaded, as they are designed to carry their load in a particular way.
Other things we look for: insulation pushed into the eaves and blocking airflow, old cold-water tanks and pipes that need lagging, and gaps around downlights and the hatch where warm air escapes.
What happens when we visit
We start with a free assessment of your loft in Cramlington. We look at the depth and condition of any insulation, the access, the timbers, the ventilation and anything stored up there. You then get a written quotation that sets out the scope, the materials and the price before anything is agreed. We use Knauf Earthwool mineral wool loft roll, which is rated Euroclass A1 and non-combustible. The work is carried out by The Insulation Company or an approved installation partner, and we finish with completion checks. If you want storage as well, we can add raised boarding and a loft ladder in the same visit.

Can I board my loft in a 1970s Cramlington house?
Usually, yes. We use raised loft boarding, which sits on legs above the insulation, so it isn't squashed. We check the roof structure first and only board where it is suitable. The guide to boarding over insulation explains how it works.
How much does loft insulation cost in Cramlington?
It depends on the size of your loft, how much insulation is already there, how easy the loft is to get into and whether anything has to be cleared or removed first. We give you a written quotation after a free assessment, so you know the scope, materials and price before you agree to anything. Our guide to what affects the cost explains the main factors.
How long does loft insulation take in a Cramlington home?
It depends on the size of the loft and what needs doing. Most straightforward jobs are short, and work that involves removing old insulation, boarding or ventilation takes longer. Your quotation says what is involved, and you can read more in how long loft insulation takes.
Are there loft insulation grants in Cramlington?
Government-backed schemes change from time to time and eligibility depends on your household and your home, so we can't promise that you will qualify. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check. We are always happy to quote for the work on its own.
