Loft services in Skipton
Homes in Skipton and their lofts
Skipton is a market town at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, with the castle at the top of the high street and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal running through the middle. Much of its older housing is stone-built, including rows of terraces from the town's industrial past, and around them there are later semis, bungalows and newer estates. Stone terraces like these tend to have small lofts, steep roofs, shared party walls and insulation that is often thin, old and uneven.
The weather matters here too. Skipton gets more rain than the east side of Yorkshire, and lofts in older stone houses can be prone to damp if the airflow is poor. Packing more insulation into a loft without checking the ventilation can make condensation worse, so we look at the eaves, the roof covering and any signs of moisture before recommending anything. If there is already mould, our mould and condensation service deals with the cause.
What we usually recommend
In most lofts it is a top-up to the recommended 270mm with Knauf Earthwool mineral wool loft roll (Euroclass A1, non-combustible), or taking out old, dirty material first and starting again. If you use the loft for storage, raised loft boarding keeps the boards above the insulation so it isn't squashed. Where headroom is very tight, SuperFOIL multifoil can be an option. Our loft insulation page explains each one.
If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with North Yorkshire Council before any work starts, as some works can need consent.

Loft insulation in Skipton: FAQs
Do you really cover Skipton?
Yes, Skipton and the villages close to it are in our area, but it is at the far western edge. Send us your postcode and we will confirm whether we can cover it and when we can book an assessment.
My stone terrace feels damp in the loft. Should I add insulation?
Not until the cause of the damp is understood. In older stone houses it is often poor ventilation or a roof issue. We check this at the free assessment and will tell you if something needs sorting first. Our article on loft condensation and ventilation explains more.
How much does loft insulation cost in Skipton?
It depends on the size of your loft, what is already up there, how easy it is to get into and which material suits it. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. Our guide to what affects the cost explains the main factors.
How long does the work take?
It depends on the size of the loft and what needs doing first, such as clearing old insulation or fitting boarding. Most straightforward jobs are short, and your quotation sets out what to expect. There is more in how long loft insulation takes.
Are there grants for loft insulation in Skipton?
Government-backed schemes come and go, and whether you qualify depends on the scheme and your circumstances, so we can't promise eligibility. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains what to check. We can still give you a free assessment and written quotation either way.
