Homes in Stockton-on-Tees and their lofts

Stockton is an old market town with what is often called the widest high street in the country, and its housing has grown out in rings from there. Close to the centre and around Newtown you find Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Stockton’s first council houses went up in the 1930s, and estates such as Roseworth, Hardwick and Fairfield followed in the decades after. Hartburn and Norton have a good mix of older homes and larger semis, and Bishopsgarth and Elm Tree Farm have more modern housing.

In the older terraces and semis, insulation is usually something added later, often thin and squashed down. A loft insulation top-up to the recommended 270mm of mineral wool is the common fix. In post-war council-built homes we often find insulation that was laid once and never touched, sometimes with boards on top. Newer houses usually have trussed rafter roofs and some insulation from new, but not always to today’s depth.

Common loft problems we look for in Stockton

  • Boarded lofts with too little insulation underneath. If you want to keep storage space, raised loft boarding lifts the floor above the insulation.
  • Old, dusty or damaged insulation that is better taken out than covered over.
  • Blocked eaves and poor airflow, which can lead to condensation and mould.
  • Awkward hatches that make the loft hard to use. We can fit a metal loft ladder.

Our loft insulation guide explains the materials we use, including Knauf Earthwool mineral wool and SuperFOIL multifoil.

How a job works

We start with a free assessment of your loft, measuring the insulation and checking the airflow, timbers and access. You then receive a written quotation setting out the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. The installation is carried out by The Insulation Company or an approved installation partner, and we finish with completion checks. Eligible installations come with a written guarantee of up to five years; terms are in your quotation.

Loft insulation in Stockton-on-Tees: FAQs

Do you cover Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Norton?

Yes. As well as Stockton itself (TS18 and TS19) we cover Norton (TS20), Eaglescliffe and Egglescliffe (TS16) and Yarm (TS15).

My loft is already boarded. Can I still add insulation?

Usually, yes. Either the boards come up so insulation can be added and raised boarding goes down on top, or we advise on the best option after looking at your loft. See boarding over loft insulation.

How much does loft insulation cost in Stockton?

It depends on the size of your loft, what is already up there, how easy it is to get into and which material suits it. After a free assessment you get a written quotation setting out the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. See what affects the cost.

How long does the work take?

It depends on the size of the loft and what is involved. Most straightforward installations and top-ups are short jobs; clearing old insulation, boarding or treating mould adds time. Your quotation says what is involved before you agree to anything. There is more in how long loft insulation takes.

Are there grants for loft insulation in Stockton?

Some households can get help through government-backed schemes, but eligibility depends on the scheme, your home and your circumstances, and schemes change. We can’t promise funding. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check.
