Gateshead's older streets in Bensham, Saltwell and Shipcote are full of Tyneside flats, while Low Fell has larger Victorian and Edwardian homes. Further out are twentieth-century estates in Felling, Wrekenton, Dunston and Sheriff Hill. Plenty of these lofts still have thin, tired insulation.

Homes in Gateshead and their lofts

Gateshead is one of the homes of the Tyneside flat. The Shipcote estate, built in the 1860s, is often said to be the first, and streets of them still fill Bensham, Saltwell and Shipcote. From the street they look like terraced houses with two front doors side by side, one for the downstairs flat and one for the upstairs. The roof space sits above the upper flat, so insulating the loft mostly warms that flat. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease for anything about work in the roof space first.

Low Fell has bigger Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, often with roomy lofts and older, patchy insulation. Out towards Felling, Windy Nook, Wrekenton, Sheriff Hill and Dunston there's more twentieth-century housing, much of it with a thin first layer of wool that has never been topped up.

Whatever the age of the house, the aim is the same. Our loft insulation brings the loft up to the recommended 270mm of mineral wool, keeps the eaves clear so the roof can breathe, and insulates tanks and pipes left above the new layer.

Common loft problems we look for here

  • Thin, flattened wool in older terraces, often 50mm to 100mm. A loft insulation top-up is usually the answer.
  • Boards laid straight onto the insulation, which squashes it. Raised loft boarding keeps the storage and the warmth.
  • Condensation and mould where vents are blocked. See loft condensation and ventilation.
  • Party walls in older terraces that don't reach the roof or have gaps. We check them and tell you what we find.

Loft insulation in Gateshead: FAQs

Can you insulate the loft above a Tyneside flat in Bensham or Saltwell?

Usually, yes, from the upstairs flat, where the hatch normally is. If the flat is leasehold, check your lease first (many Tyneside flats have leases where each owner is landlord of the other flat). If you rent, ask your landlord.

Do you cover Low Fell, Felling and Birtley?

Yes. We cover all of Gateshead, including Low Fell, Felling, Bensham, Saltwell, Wrekenton and Dunston, plus Birtley. Not sure about your street? Call 0800 229 4668.

How much does loft insulation cost in Gateshead?

It depends on the size of the loft, what is already up there, how easy it is to get into and which material suits it. We don't publish set prices because every loft is different. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. See what affects the cost.

How long does loft insulation take in a Gateshead home?

It depends on the size of the loft and whether old insulation has to come out first. Most straightforward jobs are short, and your quotation says how long yours should take. There's more detail in how long loft insulation takes.

Are there grants for loft insulation in Gateshead?

Some households can get help through government-backed schemes, but eligibility depends on the scheme and your circumstances, so we can't promise it. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check.
