Homes in Hebburn and their lofts

Hebburn grew on coal and ships. Hebburn Colliery worked from 1792 until 1932, and the Hawthorn Leslie yard on the riverside built ships for well over a century. The older housing near the river and around Hebburn New Town reflects that: terraces and Tyneside flats with small, low lofts. These often have a thin layer of old wool, so a top-up to the recommended 270mm is the usual job.

Much of the rest of the town is post-war and later housing, including council-built semis and terraces with simple pitched roofs. These lofts are generally easy to get into and work in. Newer homes usually have trussed roofs and more insulation already. There, the common request is storage, and raised loft boarding lets you store things without crushing the insulation.

Hebburn is about 37 miles north of Middlesbrough, reached up the A19 and A194. Our loft insulation page explains how a job runs from start to finish.

Common loft problems we look for here

In older terraces we look for old cold-water tanks, loose cables buried under insulation and gaps around the hatch. In homes that have had insulation added in patches over the years, we often find uneven depths, with some sections well covered and others almost bare. A loft inspection sorts out what you have.

Condensation is the other thing we check. If insulation has been pushed into the eaves, air can’t move through the loft and moisture builds up on timbers. We clear the eaves, and where needed fit loft ventilation.

Every job starts with a free assessment and a written quotation that sets out the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. We usually use Knauf Earthwool mineral wool loft roll, which is non-combustible, laid in two layers to 270mm. The work is done by The Insulation Company or an approved installation partner, and we finish with checks on depth, eaves and the hatch.

Loft insulation in Hebburn: FAQs

Do you cover Boldon Colliery?

Yes. We cover Hebburn (NE31) and Boldon Colliery (NE35), along with Jarrow and South Shields. If you’re not sure, call 0800 229 4668.

I’d like to use my loft for storage. Can I still insulate it?

Yes. We lay insulation to the full 270mm and fit raised boarding on legs above it, so the wool keeps its depth. See boarding over loft insulation for more.

How do I know if my loft needs more insulation?

If you can see the tops of the joists, the insulation is less than about 100mm deep and well short of 270mm. Our guide to the signs your loft needs a top-up explains what to look for, or book a free assessment.

How much does loft insulation cost in Hebburn?

It depends on the size of your loft, how much insulation is already there, how easy the space is to get into and whether anything needs clearing, boarding or ventilating first. We don’t give prices before we’ve seen the loft. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price set out. Our cost guide explains what moves the price.

Can I get a grant for loft insulation?

Some households qualify for help through government or energy-supplier schemes, but it depends on your circumstances and the scheme rules at the time. We can’t promise eligibility. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check.
