Homes in Scarborough and their lofts

Scarborough grew into a seaside spa resort in the 19th century, and a lot of its housing dates from that time. On the South Cliff the Regency and Victorian terraces are still intact, many now divided into flats. Falsgrave, the original inland village, and the streets around the town centre have long rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Further out, Eastfield, Newby and Scalby have a broad mix of post-war and more recent homes. In older properties the loft insulation is often thin and uneven, and in converted buildings the roof space may be shared, divided or hard to reach.

Being on the coast matters too. Scarborough's homes take a lot of wind and damp sea air, and a loft that is well insulated but badly ventilated can trap moisture. That shows up as condensation on the underside of the roof, damp timbers or a musty smell, and sometimes as mould. Before we add any depth we check the eaves, the felt and the airflow, and if the loft needs it we sort out ventilation first. If there is already mould, our mould and condensation service deals with the cause as well as the marks.

What we usually recommend

For most lofts that means bringing the insulation up to the recommended 270mm with Knauf Earthwool mineral wool loft roll (Euroclass A1, non-combustible), either as a fresh install or a top-up over what is already there. Where old insulation is dirty, damp or has been disturbed by pests, taking it out first gives a better result. If you use the loft for storage, raised boarding keeps the boards clear of the insulation. Our main loft insulation page explains each option.

Loft insulation in Scarborough: FAQs

Do you cover Whitby, Pickering and Filey?

Yes. As well as Scarborough itself we cover Whitby, Pickering and Filey and the villages in between. Send us your postcode if you are not sure.

I live near the sea. Does that change what you recommend?

It can. Coastal homes are more exposed to wind and damp air, so we pay close attention to ventilation and any signs of condensation before adding insulation. You can read more in our article on loft condensation and ventilation.

Can you insulate the loft in a converted flat?

Often, yes, if you have the right to access the roof space and it can be reached safely. Where the loft is shared, the freeholder or other owners may need to agree. We will look at it at the free assessment.

How much does loft insulation cost in Scarborough?

It depends on the size of your loft, what is already up there, how easy it is to get into and which material suits it. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. Our guide to what affects the cost explains the main factors.

Are there grants for loft insulation in Scarborough?

Government-backed schemes come and go, and whether you qualify depends on the scheme and your circumstances, so we can't promise eligibility. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains what to check. We can still give you a free assessment and written quotation either way.

The boys were very kind and well advised. They got the job done quickly and smoothly. My loft was in pretty bad shape, as I have a slight hoarding problem, and they passed no judgement. Thank you for your service.

It was refreshing to have two young lads who came in and worked incredibly hard on my loft. They came early and left late to get the job done. The best workers I’ve had in a long time, and I would recommend them 100%.
