Homes in Wallsend and their lofts

Wallsend takes its name from the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, where the Segedunum fort stood, but most of the town was built much later, around the shipyards on the Tyne. The older streets near the town centre and Wallsend Green include terraces and Tyneside flats. The town then spread out: Rosehill east of the Wallsend Burn is pre-war, Howdon is mostly post-war, and High Farm and Hadrian Lodge to the north came later.

Each era leaves a different kind of loft. Older terraces often have a thin, flattened layer of wool and sometimes party walls that don't reach the roof. Post-war houses usually had a single layer added years ago that never got topped up. Newer homes start better, but storage can squash the insulation flat. Our loft insulation brings any of them up to the recommended 270mm of mineral wool.

Tyneside flats in Wallsend

If you live in a Tyneside flat, with two front doors side by side, the loft is usually over the upstairs flat and reached from it. Insulating it mainly warms the upper flat. Many of these flats have leases where each owner is landlord of the other flat, so check your lease (or ask your landlord if you rent) before any work in the roof space.

Common loft problems we look for here

  • Old insulation well below 270mm. A top-up is the usual fix.
  • Damp or droppings in old insulation. It may need removing first, with rodent proofing where there are signs of mice.
  • Condensation from blocked eaves, especially near the river. Loft ventilation helps.
  • No safe way up. A loft ladder and raised boarding make the space usable.

Loft insulation in Wallsend: FAQs

Do you cover Howdon, Willington Quay and Battle Hill?

Yes. We cover the whole of Wallsend (NE28), including Howdon, Willington Quay, Rosehill, Holy Cross, High Farm, Hadrian Lodge and Battle Hill.

Can you insulate the loft of a Tyneside flat?

Usually, yes, from the upstairs flat, where the loft hatch normally is. Check your lease first, or ask your landlord if you rent. If you live downstairs, your ceiling is the upper flat's floor, so loft insulation won't change it.

How much does loft insulation cost in Wallsend?

It depends on the size of the loft, what is already up there, how easy it is to get into and which material suits it. We don't publish set prices because every loft is different. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. See what affects the cost.

How long does loft insulation take in a Wallsend home?

It depends on the size of the loft and whether old insulation has to come out first. Most straightforward jobs are short, and your quotation says how long yours should take. There's more detail in how long loft insulation takes.

Are there grants for loft insulation in Wallsend?

Some households can get help through government-backed schemes, but eligibility depends on the scheme and your circumstances, so we can't promise it. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check.
