Homes in Jarrow and their lofts
Jarrow’s town centre and the streets near the river were built for workers at Palmer’s shipyard, which ran from 1852 until it closed in 1933. Much of that housing is terraced, including Tyneside flats, where the loft sits over the upstairs flat only. These lofts tend to be small and low, often with a narrow hatch, and many have only a thin layer of old insulation. A top-up to the recommended 270mm is usually the answer, but we check timbers and wiring first.
Towards the south of the town, Fellgate and Hedworth have more post-war and later family homes, and Monkton has a mix of older and newer properties. Lofts in these houses are generally roomier and simpler to work in. Where people want to store things up there, we fit raised loft boarding so the insulation underneath isn’t squashed.
Jarrow is about 37 miles north of Middlesbrough, up the A19 towards the Tyne Tunnel. Our loft insulation page explains how we approach the work.
Common loft problems we look for here
- Thin, flattened wool laid decades ago, sometimes only partly covering the loft.
- Old water tanks and pipes that need insulating or working around.
- Damp and condensation where the eaves are blocked. Being close to the river, we check airflow and add loft ventilation where needed.
- Signs of mice in older terraces. If we find them, rodent proofing and removal of soiled material come first.
If you’re not sure whether your loft needs anything, our guide to the signs your loft needs a top-up is a good place to start.
Every job starts with a free assessment. We measure what’s there, check the joists, wiring and eaves, then give you a written quotation with the scope, materials and price before anything is agreed. The work is done by The Insulation Company or an approved installation partner, usually with Knauf Earthwool mineral wool loft roll laid to 270mm.

Loft insulation in Jarrow: FAQs
Do you cover Fellgate, Hedworth and Monkton?
Yes. We cover the whole of Jarrow across the NE32 postcode district, including Fellgate, Hedworth and Monkton. If you’re unsure, call 0800 229 4668.
My loft hatch is tiny. Can you still insulate it?
Usually. Small hatches are common in Jarrow’s older terraces. Loft roll can be fed through most hatches, and if access is really tight we can talk about fitting a larger hatch with a loft ladder. We’ll check on the free assessment.
How much does loft insulation cost in Jarrow?
It depends on the size of your loft, how much insulation is already there, how easy the space is to get into and whether anything needs clearing, boarding or ventilating first. We don’t give prices before we’ve seen the loft. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price set out. Our cost guide explains what moves the price.
How long does the work take?
It depends on the size of the loft and what needs doing. Most straightforward jobs are short, while removal of old insulation or boarding adds time. Your quotation tells you what to expect. There’s more in how long loft insulation takes.
Can I get a grant for loft insulation?
Some households qualify for help through government or energy-supplier schemes, but it depends on your circumstances and the scheme rules at the time. We can’t promise eligibility. Our guide to loft insulation grants explains where to check.

Feedback from customers who have used our insulation services.
The boys were very kind and well advised. They got the job done quickly and smoothly. My loft was in pretty bad shape, as I have a slight hoarding problem, and they passed no judgement. Thank you for your service.
Absolutely great work. Honestly, they were so easy to work with, there were no hassles and a great job was completed. Would highly recommend.
It was refreshing to have two young lads who came in and worked incredibly hard on my loft. They came early and left late to get the job done. The best workers I’ve had in a long time, and I would recommend them 100%.
