Homes in South Shields and their lofts

South Shields sits where the Tyne meets the North Sea, and much of its older housing went up for workers on the river. Around Westoe, Laygate, Tyne Dock and the town centre you’ll find long Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many of them Tyneside flats: an upper and a lower flat in what looks like one terraced house. In these, the loft sits over the upstairs flat only, and access is usually through a small hatch on the upper landing. Lofts like this often have a thin layer of old wool, or none at all over some sections.

Further out, Harton, Cleadon Park, Biddick Hall and Whiteleas have a lot of inter-war and post-war housing. These lofts are usually simple and easy to work in, and many just need a top-up to the recommended 270mm. Newer homes towards Brockley Whins and Simonside often have more insulation already, but storage is the usual issue: boards laid straight onto the joists squash the wool, which is why we fit raised loft boarding instead.

South Shields is about 38 miles north of Middlesbrough, reached up the A19 and A194. See how we approach every job on our loft insulation page.

Common loft problems we look for here

Near the coast at Marsden, Horsley Hill and the seafront, damp, salty air finds its way into roof spaces. If the eaves are blocked or the loft is sealed up, moisture condenses on the underside of the roof and on timbers. Before adding insulation we check airflow, and where it’s needed we add loft ventilation. If there are already signs of mould, our mould and condensation service looks at the cause, not just the stains.

In older terraces we also look for old water tanks, loose wiring lying under the insulation, and gaps around the hatch, which lets warm air straight into the loft.

Every job starts with a free assessment and a written quotation, so you know exactly what is being done and what it costs before you agree to anything. The work is carried out by The Insulation Company or an approved installation partner.

Loft insulation in South Shields: FAQs

Can you insulate the loft of a Tyneside flat?

Yes. In a Tyneside flat the loft is above the upstairs flat, so it’s usually the upper-flat owner who arranges the work. We check access, the condition of the existing insulation and any shared parts of the roof space on the free assessment.

Do you cover Marsden, Whitburn and East Boldon?

Yes. We cover all of South Shields across NE33 and NE34, plus East Boldon and Whitburn. If your area isn’t named here, call 0800 229 4668 and we’ll tell you.

Will insulating my loft make condensation worse near the sea?

Not if it’s done properly. A well-insulated loft is colder, so it needs air moving through it. We keep the eaves clear and add vents where needed. Read more in loft condensation and ventilation.

How much does loft insulation cost in South Shields?

It depends on the size of your loft, how much insulation is already there, how easy the space is to get into and whether anything needs clearing, boarding or ventilating first. We don’t give prices before we’ve seen the loft. After a free assessment you get a written quotation with the scope, materials and price set out. Our cost guide explains what moves the price.

How long does the work take?

It depends on the size of the loft and what needs doing. Most straightforward jobs are short, while removal of old insulation or boarding adds time. Your quotation tells you what to expect. There’s more in how long loft insulation takes.
